James W. Rouse Community Service Day

This year our Baltimore James W. Rouse Community Service Day is scheduled for Saturday September 15th and in addition to our partnership with Enterprise we will be supported by Baltimore Volunteers Unlimited (BVU). We will focus our efforts primarily in three regions; Charles Village, Sandtown Winchester and the Jones Falls Valley.  Each region will include three to four separate smaller projects.

Mikey Monahan, on behalf of Property Management and Ada Ma representing the Charles Village development will work with our community partners and construction team to organize and implement The Charles Village projects; a sampling that includes a school, a park and a non-profit.  In partnership with Parks and People, Neighborhood Design Service, the Barclay school community and members of the Waverly Community Association and with Rich Wilkens’ construction support and guidance, we will return to the Barclay school to help implement the next phase of their master landscaping plan; one designed to green the environment by removing asphalt and creating a grass covered field for kids to run and play.

At the Village Learning Place, a non-profit community-based library, learning center, educational garden, and technology center serving diverse populations in Charles Village, Sean Scott in collaboration with members of the garden committee developed a plan so that volunteers can weed, plant and beautify the educational garden on our service day.  In addition volunteers will do some painting and cleaning up around the perimeter of the center. Liesje Gantert, Executive Director of The Village Learning Place will tap into The Charles Village Community Assoc., The Charles Village Civic Assoc., The Able Assoc. and the Old Goucher Community Assoc. for volunteers and support.  In advance of the day, Tom Clark will work his way through the center’s extensive wish list that includes the installation of storage shelving, repair of doors, patching of ceilings, repair and replacement of lighting fixtures and many other routine maintenance needs that are outside the reach of the building operations budget.

Steve Hulse will provide the construction oversight for what will be our fourth volunteer event at the Wyman Park Dell.  Once again we will join forces with the Friends of Wyman Park Dell and Baltimore City’s Department of Recreation and Parks.  In addition to contributing to the overall maintenance needs of the park, our focus will include removal of invasive plants and slope stabilization using native plants.
